Inequalities on HIlltown Main Street References Inequalities on HIlltown Main Street Drawing on what you have learned about City Road, outline some of the inequalities on a street that you know. Hilltown’s Main Street is typical of a small town, and is where most of the towns businesses are situated.   Consisting of six bars, three hairdressers, and three take-aways with only two grocery stores and a small butchers shop, it is perhaps a reflection on how contemporary society’s consumption has shaped this street.   Some of the key issues I wish to discuss are the structure of the street, traffic flow, parking, disability access and some local businesses. The main part of the street is built around the joining of three T-junctions, in the centre is a large parking area called ‘The Square’.   With traffic coming in five directions the only means of traffic control are two islands to try and make crossing the road easier.   Cars using the street as just a through-road generally win the competition for use of space, as they have priority, with little to stop them.   This is in comparison to the drivers trying to join the main flow of traffic from the three roads that form the T-Junctions, who lose out with long waits, like the pedestrians trying to cross. It is on this end of the street that the bigger more successful businesses are situated and the main reason seems to be the ease of access due to plentiful parking and good footpaths.   The other half of the street is on a steep hill full of drainage shunts, uneven pavements and high kerbs into every entrance. This means that access is very restricted for those with children in prams or those with limited mobility.   Those who can access it easily are residents of nearby houses and the able bodied pedestrians.   Due to the limited parking on this half of the street, drivers find it difficult to access these businesses.   Therefore they are smaller and lose out because they have a limited consumer base. The ratio of premises offering non-essential commodities compared to essential is almost 3:1.  Ã‚   This is a reflection of Zygmunt Bauman’s (1988), theory of the seduced and the repressed.   The hairdressers, for example, draw in clients on a daily basis. Some choose to return weekly in order to try and effectively consume a service which allows them to maintain an image they deem socially acceptable.   Bauman would refer to these as the seduced.   Those with limited means however, cannot participate in this form of consumption – the elderly on limited pensions, the unemployed and the younger generations for example.   These are seen as the repressed. Bars are not a new commodity to the Main Street, some dating as far back as the 18th century, they are however maintained by the current consumer demand.   Most of them have modernised, in particularly Minnie’s where the 20 something’s like to socialise.   It is because of this reputation that a lot of the older generations feel excluded.   The loud music and pool tables appeal more to the young employed people who aspire to a strong identity and social acceptance within the bar.   Lowry’s however is known locally as the working man’s bar, a bar which, before the smoking ban, smelt of cigar smoke, and even had a ‘men’s room’ where the men would gather and talk undisturbed around an open fire.   Like the Men’s Municipal Club on City Road Cardiff (Visual Material), perhaps Lowry’s hangs on to an imagined past leaving the men with a wonderful sense of belonging but which means that women, young people and new member s often see it as a that is quite exclusive to its recognised clientele.   The Hotel caters for the middle aged consumers, again because of reputation.   Here teenagers and young people feel this is not the image they wish to be associated with. No matter what happens in Main Street; from navigating the junctions, to socialising, to consumers having their hair done there are inclusions and exclusions.   Whether one has a large surplus income or lesser means, the winners and losers in consumption are not always obvious, but there are always divisions and inequalities to be seen. Whilst the traffic inequalities cannot be resolved without great expense (e.g. traffic lights), people have learned to work around this.   Inequalities are not negative when the street is viewed as a whole.   When people feel excluded from one establishment they are generally included in another i.e. Lowry’s, Minnie’s and the hotel all have a specific and different custom.   However the issue of disability access to the lower half of Main Street may not be resolved any time soon.   It is because of situations like this that there will always be a percentage that are repressed and excluded from our society. The festival was a 2-day event held at Serna Plaza, C.S.U.S, Sacramento. The performers lined up included Prezident Brown, Earl Zero, Amandla Poets, Ras Rebel, Gale Revila, The Huklebucks, J.J. and Bryon J., Ze Manel, Brother G. with the River, Jordan Band, Ayouba and the Blazing Cornerstones, TuFan, Meguen Touko, and the Green Acres. I was particularly interested in Prezident Brown whose performance was the last today at about 6pm. Fitz Albert Cotterell, aka Prezident Brown, is a champion in the new Jamaican root reggae, reality consciousness; he entertains, informs and inspires. His message is pure Rasta conscious vibes. Prezident Brown performed with the Orchestra of Judah, a four-member instruments group. The instruments the Orchestra used included Guitars, drums, and the keyboard. The concert songs from Prezident Brown included among others, To Jah only (prayer for the world), Woman of rising sun, Lionheart, Mother nature, Straighten out, By Tomorrow, Down in the Valley, Faith, In this life, African Woman, Talking Drums, and Encouragement. The Impaired Employee and Liability Essay I believe that the first ethical consideration is the fact that the potential employee was upfront in revealing that he had a degenerative progressive condition that could result in a disability. He did not have to bring this to our attention and his physicians are not even able to predict when the disabling condition will appear or if it will appear at all. The candidate was demonstrating his own highly ethical behavior which is ultimately what we are looking for in an employee. The second ethical consideration is that we are responsible for displaying the same kind of ethical behavior we expect from our employees. The basis for any ethical decision is based on what is morally right or wrong. The right thing to do in any hiring situation is to hire the best possible candidate. The candidate in question went through the screening and interview process and was the number one pick of mine and the screening committee. His potential health problems have nothing to do with his professional abilities and whether or not he would be able to competently perform his duties. A third ethical consideration is the fact that I shared my concerns with other high ranking company officials and instead of looking at the qualifications of the candidate they looked at the financial risk the candidate could impose on the company in the future. I believe we should have considered what an asset his skills and abilities would have been to the company versus an unknown financial risk due to a possible disability that may not occur. Identify and explain at least three legal considerations. The first legal consideration would be in denying the candidate employment because of any kind of disability. The Americans with Disabilities act prohibits any employer from discriminating against a qualified individual with a disability in the job application procedure, hiring, firing, advancement and other privileges of employment (EEOC, 2008). The qualifications of the individual should be the only determining factor on whether or not they are hired. The second legal consideration could be that the screening committee shared confidential information about the candidate without his knowledge. The physicians of the candidate did not even know whether or not the disability would occur or to what extent so there was no reason to share this information with anyone else. The last legal consideration is the liability that could come with hiring this candidate. Healthcare organizations have a corporate responsibility to exercise reasonable care in selecting and retaining employees (Showalter, 2008, pg. 137). If the Health Service organization were to hire this candidate knowing he could possibly become disabled and then get hurt on the job because the facility did not properly accommodate his disability then they would be liable for any injuries that the employee might incur while on the job. Identify and explain at least three Business considerations. One business consideration is what the candidate could potentially bring to the business. His skills and qualifications ranked him as the number one candidate which would make him an asset to the company. The possibility of the candidate costing the company money is a vague at best but the potential good he could do the company is set forth in his qualifications. Another business consideration would be the cost to the company if the candidate were hired and did end up with a disability. Even though they can not discriminate against the candidate for having a possibility disability they should evaluate the cost that the company would incur if it had to accommodate his disability in the future. There is the potential of the employee missing time due to his disability and the cost of providing reasonable accommodations. The last business consideration is that the screening committee has a duty to evaluate and screen potential employees with no bias. If they deny employment to a candidate based on this information they are compromising their integrity. They need to have and follow a specific set of guidelines in searching, screening and recommending potential candidates for employment. Another business consideration is the possibility that if the candidate were not hired that he would file a complaint stating that he was discriminated against because he revealed his health status. Even if he could not prove it there would still be an investigation, a trial and publicity about the case that could possibly hurt the reputation of the facility. Give your decision as the Vice President for health Services and the rationale for the decision. The search and screening committee found an outstanding candidate for the mid-level management position. It is not ethically or legally right to eliminate this candidate based on a possible disability in his future. It is my duty to hire the most qualified candidate and even though he may have a health issue in the future he is, in the present, my candidate of choice. I am not concern with what America is today my true focus is what America is so eager to become. That is why I stand before with sincerity and honesty in my heart and a burning, determined desire to make America once again â€Å"the country that sits upon a hill†, and the epitome of a strong united nation that stands E Pluribus Unum. Thank you , all of you, for taking time out of your busy schedules to lend an ear to my Presidential Speech on this beautiful night of February 22, 2005. I was born to a loving family, but in a dangerous environment in Charleston, S.C. In a single parent I was reared and I learned a lot about struggle and literally learned how to make a dollar out of 15 cent. Though it was hard my mother instilled this determination that I am able to share with you all on this night. She became my brother and I driving force and never settle for less. As a young child I sat and realized that an insignificant child like myself could one day make a difference in this united nation. The few years between my father’s incarceration and my mother and his separation he did teach me a lot of meaningful values of life. He insured me that having great character can carry you farther in life than any amount of money or anything materialistic value. He instilled in me that being a people’s person would always make your life easier in anything you do even in an a Presidential Election. So, right that second my political siding was chosen without me even knowing. The principles of the West Wing was instilled in me a that age of 7 years old. I was practically raised as a politician of the People’s Party because that was the party that benefitted me and all you who stand here today. Not knowing one day that young African American boy from Ten Mile Hill of Charleston South Carolina would be known as the â€Å"People’s Politician† and will soon be known as the â€Å"People’s President†. My desire to lead this great country didn’t just appear over night nor did my determination to lead this great country surfaced a day after 9/11.

On September 11th 2001 at 8:45 am an American Airlines Jet Flight 11, hit the north tower of the World Trade Center; several minutes later at 9:06 United Airlines flight 175 hit the south tower of the World Trade Center. Most of the citizens of the United States watched their televisions in horror as this terrible tragedy unfolded. This single terrorist attack on U. S. soil brought to the attention of the average American citizen, the capability of the extreme Islamic sect of the Muslim religion, to mastermind and carry out a massive destructive attack. This ill view of the Islamic faith remains years after 9/11. A more comprehensive knowledge of their faith and its good attributes will help in our perceptions and how we treat members of this religious order. There are certain sects of the Islamic faith that are terrorists; this has been proven in more than one instance. For example the recent bombing during the Boston marathon, the suspect Tamerian Tsarnaev according to the FBI state, â€Å"he was a follower of radical Islam†. (Federal Bureau of Investigation, 2013) These are the radicals of the faith. There are many more Muslims that are good people who have no intention of hurting anyone. There has been a backlash against Muslims for several years in many countries including the United States. This has made it very difficult for people of the Muslim faith to carry on regular day-to-day interactions and dealings with people that are not of their faith. We will explore the Muslim population in the United States, Great Britain, Pakistan, the Middle East, India and other Asian countries. We will examine the number of Muslims in these countries, how Islam is perceived in these countries and how the Muslim population interacts with people of Jewish and Christian faiths. According to Malloy, Islam whose followers are known as Muslim, is a monotheistic faith. They believe in God/Allah, that Muhammad is their prophet and the Qur’an is the written record of revelation to mankind. The Qur’an uses the term People of the Book to include all monotheists, including Jews, Christians and Muslims. According to Islam, all nations were given a Messenger and guidance from Allah. Islam teaches that Judaism worships one god but the idea that any one people being the chosen people is considered racist. Islam teaches that Christianity also worships one god but rejects the notion of the trinity as polytheistic. There are 4 major sects within the Islamic faith. The first sect is named Shi’a. The Second Sect is named Sunni. The third group is called Sufis. The fourth major sect is the Ahmaddiya. (Malloy, 2010) In the United States the three main practiced religions are Christianity, Judaism and Islam. There have been interfaith initiatives to find harmony among these three faiths. One thing that has been observed is that Muslim Imams have been included in many more public and governmental ceremonies in recent years. The Distribution of the Muslim Population in the World It is thought, by the general population in the United States, that the majority of the Muslim world population is located in the Middle East. The fact is, that of the target areas this paper is exploring, only four countries fall into the top ten populations of Muslims. The nations with the largest percentage of Muslims are Somalia in Africa 99. %, Afghanistan in the Middle East 99. 7%, Tunisia in Africa 99. 5%, Western Sahara in Africa 99. 4%, Mauritania in Africa 99. 1%, Yemen in the Middle East 99. 1%, Morocco in Africa 98. 9%, Iran in the Middle East 98. 6%, Maldives in Asia 98. 4% and Comoros in Africa 98. 3%. (Most Muslim Nations (2005), 2013) As you can see, six of the top ten Muslim nations as a percentage of population are in Asia. These demographics are quite different than what most Americans perceive. Islam is perceived differently in different cultures United States The United States has in its constitution, Amendment I enacted in 1791, which states â€Å"Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof†. (Congress, 1791) This requires that the government must abstain from interfering with any religious organization. According to Bell (2007), Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 prohibits employers of 15 people or more from discrimination against employees or applicants in hiring, firing, and other terms and conditions of employment because of their religious beliefs or practices. Employers must provide reasonable accommodations for the practice of one’s religion. The three most practiced religions in the United States are Christianity, Judaism, and Islam. Even though the government is not a problem for the Muslim population in the United States, the radicals of the Islamic faith, with their extremely destructive, disruptive actions have made the general population wary of anyone associated with Islam, this has lead to the development of many problems as well as discriminatory, prejudiced attitudes and actions toward people of the Muslim faith. There have been interfaith initiatives to find harmony among the three faiths. Such as Initiatives of Change who are an international group who’s goals are â€Å"committed to the transformation of society through change in human motives and behavior. † (Initiatives of Change, 2013) It has also been observed that Muslim Imams have been included in many more public and governmental ceremonies in recent years. Great Britain Next to Christianity, â€Å"the second largest religion in Great Britain is Islam. There are a number of variants of Islam practiced in the UK, due largely to the number of immigrants stemming from numerous former colonies in South Asia. Estimates also put the number of white converts to Islam at up to 100,000. † (Islamic Culture in Europe, 2013) The Muslim population in Great Britain is 1,640,725 which is 2. 7% of the population and places them as the one hundred third (103) place as a percentage of population to the total population. (Most Muslim Nations (2005), 2013) According to Islamic Culture in Europe (2013) in Great Britain the majority of Muslims practice Sunni Islam. There is also a large presence of Iranian-Shia which are the minority. With this noticeable existence of followers of the Islamic faith many groups have been showing increased concern. â€Å"A startling 75% of the British population believes that Islam has a negative impact on British society and tensions remain following the 7/7 bombings in London. The press has also been largely negative, publishing articles on extremism in schools and mosques. † (Islamic Culture in Europe, 2013) â€Å"Despite these problems and difficulties, religious freedom laws in the UK make it one of the most accepting in Europe. There is no law restricting Islamic dress, acceptance of prayer schedules in most workplaces, and heavily protected freedom of speech laws. † (Islamic Culture in Europe, 2013) India The Muslim population in India is 166,097,980 which is 13. 7% of the general population. (CIA World Factbook, 2013) Though the number of people seems like quite a few, we have to remember that India has a lot of people. They have the second largest population in the world. We also have to remember that Pakistan and Bangladesh were part of the original India and broke off from India over religion. They have the seventieth (70) largest population of Muslims in the world. (Most Muslim Nations (2005), 2013) Hinduism is the most practiced religion in India and Islam is the second most practiced religion. Thru the years since Islam was introduced to India, there has been an integration of the Hindu and Muslim cultures. Civil Matters for Muslims such as marriage, inheritance and property are governed since 1937 by the Muslim Personal Law. There is much that the Hindu and Muslim cultures have contributed to each other. Art and architecture are the two most prominent items of melding of styles. The Muslims adopted the cast system into their religion in this region of the world. There are two divisions. There are the Muslims which are of Arabic decent and Muslims who are not of Arabic decent. The Arabic decent Muslims are considered superior to the non-Arab Muslims. Over the years, there has been much bloodshed and suffering because of fighting between the Muslims and the Hindus, Sikhs and Christians. There still to this day is conflict and an even greater conflict between India and Pakistan.

On the other hand England and France thought of the same ideas, bringing African slaves from Africa to work mostly on sugar plantations. In general Europeans couldn't work on farms on their own, they felt like they needed others to work for them, so they bought slaves and shipped them to the new world in order for their farms and plantations to keep going. When Spanish and Portuguese explorers first settled in the new world, they thought of calming the land they discover to their country.As they settled and as trading went by in the new world, they couldn't on the farms themselves. They basically needed others to work under their command. When the exploration went around the coast of Africa to reach India, they found what they call slaves to do farm labor in the new world. It started out as a trade with the Spanish and Portuguese and African tribe leaders. They slaves they traded for would be placed on slave ships and would be shipped to the new world. When they arrived at the new world, they wouldn't have much freedom except on the farm science now they were owned by theSpanish and Portuguese. The main reason slaves were bought by the Portuguese was for farm labor and growing different types of crops for trade. On the other hand, other European nations explored the new world and claimed land as well. The reason their slaves are called Caribbean slavery, is because they went to the Caribbean and claimed land for their countries. But their lands weren't the same as the Spanish and Portuguese. They had sugar and tobacco plantations. These type of plantations required hard work, and body strength.Of course Europeans couldn't do such work. They also bought slaves from Africa into the Caribbean. The slaves are what helped these Europeans trade valuable crops for valuable items as well. As the Spanish and Europeans expanded their empires, they needed even more slaves for more work o n more farms and plantations. And as their crops grew in size, their trade went greater too as well. This didn't only help them trade within themselves but all the way to the far east of Asia. Europeans had successful trade by their successful crops which were grown by slaves.In conclusion, Caribbean and west African slavery had many similarities and differences. Without the idea of slave trade and their farm and plantation labor, Europeans wouldn't have been the most successful traders in the world. During the 15th and 16th century, had control over the worlds trade. This trade mastering didn't only end with some crops, but many newly introduced crops to Europe helped strengthen their trade but also required trade for even more slaves. Slaves were a basic factor for Europeans in order to achieve success.

Washington Irving's Famous Story of a Sleeping Man Rip van Winkle  is an 1819 story by Washington Irving, American short-story writer. The story was published as part of The Sketch Book of Geoffrey Crayon, and was based on a German fairy tale. It chronicles the story of a man who falls asleep in the Catskills just before the American Revolution, and wakes up 20 years later to a completely different society.   Rip ends up in the mountains in the first place while trying to escape his nagging wife, and meets a man struggling with a heavy keg of moonshine. He helps the man carry it to a hollow where they encounter strange men playing a game of ninepins. Rip drinks some of their moonshine, and falls asleep 20 years later with a rusted musket and a long beard. He later learns that the man with the keg was the ghost of Henry Hudson.   Here are some questions for study and discussion about Rip van Winkle: Who are the strange men that Rip encounters in the hollow? Is it helpful to know that the story is based on a German fairy tale? Why or why not? Is Rips long sleep a reward (perhaps for helping the men playing ninepins) or a punishment (for being a generally lazy guy)? Efforts are made to draw a distinction between proverb and adage, but in common usage, the words are interchangeable. There may be a sense that adage is a classier word than proverb. Because a saying becomes a proverb or an adage by being repeated from generation to generation, the expression â€Å"old adage† is often criticized for being redundant, but it is very common: According to the famous old adage, all roads lead to Rome. Remember the old adage, A pictures worth a thousand words?
